For this month’s awareness day – Dr. Jack Routes, a clinical immunologist/physician scientist at the Medical College of Wisconsin described one major focus of his research was to develop and then implement an inexpensive, sensitive and specific test that would identify newborn infants with 22q.11.2. He went on to describe that he, along with Dr.Aoy Mitchell had indeed developed such a test and that the next step would be nominating this inexpensive option to the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorder in Newborns and Children.

On October 22nd, look out for the special 22q Monument in front of the gate entrance to your zoo. Clicking on the 22q Monument will award you with Zoo Bucks every 1 hour. Be sure to spread the word to bring awareness about 22q11.2 deletion syndrome by sharing the information with your friends on your Facebook wall!
22q11.2 deletion syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that can include a wide range of health, physical and developmental issues, including heart defects, immune and growth deficiencies, speech problems, emotional and behavioral issues and learning disabilities in some individuals.
